i don’t get it.
I rarely post about things that irritate or annoy me, but hey, now is the time. Cute as they may be, I truly do not understand the obsession with knitted / sewn / felted food. Maybe it was my childhood, as so many things can be linked to childhood right? Every snack and meal followed the same pattern: watching my grandmother systematically and methodically wrap her squishy-plastic fruit, that was displayed perfectly in its crystal bowl home, in the hand-knit table cloth. Then we would eat. The table would be cleared and the squishy grapes, oranges, pears, apples and bananas would make their appearance again. These silly, revered items called to us grandkids who plucked the squishy plastic smelling grapes from their hard unnatural plastic vines and pretended to eat the bananas and pears. These mass-produced plastic fruits were a curious still-life display. I imagine grandma paying minimal price for her fantastic find while grandpa probably was also curious about the purpose of the plastic.
So, it seems that today the iconic plastic fruit centerpiece is being replaced by crafty versions. Some are just this - crafts that take hours to complete - so that you may sit meagerly by and drool. A tempting treat to make you salivate at what you could have had by making the real thing at a fraction of the time and cost. Some of these are marketed as children’s toys. With prices hitting $85 for a single felt cake I am disinclined to purchase even a slice for my little ruffians!
Hey! To each her (or his) own. Happy crafting.
